About Real Size Of Countries

Why maps deceive us and how this interactive platform reveals the true geography of our planet.

Real Size Of Countries is an interactive web platform built to give everyone an accurate, intuitive grasp of world geography. For over 400 years, standard world maps have visually distorted landmasses, leading billions of people to dramatically underestimate the size of equatorial nations while vastly overestimating the size of northern regions.

The Mercator Problem

In 1569, Flemish cartographer Gerardus Mercator introduced a map projection designed specifically for sailing navigation. The Mercator projection preserves angles and lines of constant course (rhumb lines), making it straightforward for ship captains to chart a compass direction across vast oceans.

However, projecting the curved surface of a 3-dimensional spherical Earth onto a flat 2-dimensional sheet without distortion is mathematically impossible (as proven by Carl Friedrich Gauss in his Theorema Egregium). To preserve shapes, Mercator stretched distances toward the poles:

Linear Scale Factor: k = 1 / cos(φ) = sec(φ)

Because the scale factor is squared when measuring area, regions located at 60° latitude appear 4 times larger in area than they would at the equator. Near 70° latitude (such as northern Canada and Greenland), the visual area is inflated by over 8 to 10 times!

Our Mission

The goal of Real Size Of Countries is to democratize geographical literacy. By providing an interactive canvas where any country or state can be dragged anywhere on Earth, we empower teachers, students, geographers, and curious minds to explore the planet as it actually exists in 3D physical reality.
